Men and depression in pregnancy

Awareness of post natal depression in men is slowly beginning to grow. What is less known is the fact that men can also suffer from ante natal depression (depression in pregnancy) as well.

As many as one in ten fathers to be can be affected and it often goes undetected.

Most at risk are those men who have had a previous history of depression. As with women, it’s important that the depression is recognized and treated early and effectively.

Causes of ante natal depression in men can range from difficulty coping with the changes happening within his relationship, to anxiety about the expectations being placed on him regarding his role as a father.

Seeking support from a GP or a Counsellor can be a helpful way of dealing with depression before the birth.
